Submit a 750 to 1000-word (not including footnotes), double-spaced paper answering the writing prompt below.
Background: Daniel Flatley and Roxana Tiron recently published “‘Support Our Troops’ No Longer Automatic as Trust in Military Falls,” in Bloomberg Businessweek. This brief, argumentative, and provocative column sparks debate concerning how a variety of factors are eroding confidence and trust in the U.S. military.
The authors assert: “In the years since 2000, multiple surveys have shown the public trusts the U.S. military more than any other public institution–more than organized religion and the Supreme Court, and vastly more than Congress. But the increasing politicization of the military, a string of sexual assault scandals, the role of dozens of enlisted troops and veterans in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection, and other factors have shaken that trust. According to a Reagan Institute survey conducted in February [2021], confidence in the military has fallen by 14 percentage points since 2018–from 70% to 56%. The drop was significant regardless of age, gender, or party affiliation, and is in line with trends other researchers have observed.”
Writing prompt: Flatley and Tiron identified multiple issues negatively impacting the military profession. From a senior leader’s perspective, assess their research, analysis, and conclusions. In addition, discuss the implications for the Army and the profession. In your response, consider the topics covered in SL Lessons 1-6 (self-awareness, critical thinking, systems thinking, ethical reasoning, and the profession) to develop a clear, concise thesis and to structure a well-organized 750 to 1000-word essay. Support your thesis with evidence and cite references appropriately. An effective essay will discuss 2 or 3 of the authors’ claims, whether the research and analysis justify the conclusions, and what the implications are for the Army and the profession.
